PCOD/PCOS is one of the most common hormonal problems in young women. It can cause irregular or missed periods, weight gain, acne, hair fall, extra facial hair and difficulty conceiving. The good news: steady changes in daily habits make a real difference, along with treatment.
What happens in PCOS?
In PCOS the ovaries do not release an egg regularly. Many women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, which means the body needs more insulin to control sugar. Higher insulin increases male-type hormones, which cause acne and hair changes, and it makes weight gain easier.
The Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda relates PCOS to disturbed Kapha and Vata obstructing the channels of the reproductive system, together with weak metabolism. Treatment combines medicines, cleansing such as Virechana or Basti where suitable, and changes in diet and routine.
Food: what helps
- Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi in place of some wheat and rice
- Half the plate as vegetables and salad
- Protein at every meal: dal, chana, sprouts, paneer, curd in the daytime
- Seeds such as flax and pumpkin seeds
- Three regular meals, with a small snack if needed
Food: what to reduce
- Sugar, sweets and bakery items
- Cold drinks and packaged juices
- Fried snacks and fast food
- Late-night eating
Movement
Aim for 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily: brisk walking, cycling, yoga or dance. Add simple strength exercises such as squats twice a week. Activity improves insulin sensitivity even before weight changes.
Weight
If you are overweight, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can help periods become more regular. Slow, steady loss is better than crash diets.
Sleep and stress
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours at fixed times
- Reduce screen use late at night
- Practise pranayama or meditation for 10 minutes daily
Track your progress
Note your period dates, weight and waist every month. Reports such as ultrasound, thyroid and sugar tests are repeated as advised.
