Sciatica & slip disc

About sciatica & slip disc

Sciatica is pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down the back of one leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness. The most common cause is a bulging (slipped) disc pressing on a nerve root. Most patients improve with non-surgical care when treatment is started on time and followed properly.

Common causes

  • Disc bulge or herniation in the lower back
  • Lifting heavy weight with a bent back
  • Long hours of sitting or two-wheeler riding
  • Weak core and back muscles
  • Overweight
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal with age

Common symptoms

  • Pain from the lower back down one leg
  • Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
  • Pain on sitting long, bending or coughing
  • Difficulty standing up straight in the morning

Reports and tests that help

  • MRI of the lumbar spine (if you have one, bring it)
  • X-ray of the lower back
  • Sugar and vitamin D tests if advised

Bring any reports you already have. The doctor will advise if anything more is needed.

How we treat it at Keshavbaug

After reviewing your MRI, we plan Kati Basti and heat therapies for local relief, Basti for the underlying Vata imbalance, and Agnikarma for stubborn pain points. Posture advice and safe exercises are taught before discharge.

  1. Examination and MRI review

Nerve tests, leg raising test and MRI help decide the plan and rule out cases that need surgery.

  2. Pain relief

Kati Basti, Patra Pinda Sweda and Agnikarma reduce pain and spasm in the first days.

  3. Treating the cause

A course of Basti with internal medicines works on Vata and supports the disc and nerves.

  4. Strengthening

Safe core and back exercises and posture advice to prevent the pain from returning.

Usual courseUsually 14 to 21 days.

Therapies that may be used

Questions patients ask

Can a slip disc be treated without surgery?

Many disc bulges improve with conservative care. Surgery may still be needed when there is severe nerve damage; the doctor will tell you honestly after seeing your MRI and examination.

Do I need an MRI before coming?

If you have one, bring it. If not, the doctor will examine you first and advise whether a scan is needed.
