Sciatica: causes, Ayurvedic treatment and 8 habits that protect your back

Sciatica pain runs from the lower back down one leg. Learn why it happens, how it is treated without surgery in most cases, and which daily habits speed up recovery.

Sciatica: causes, Ayurvedic treatment and 8 habits that protect your back

Sciatica is pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down the back of one leg, sometimes to the foot. It may come with tingling, numbness or weakness. It is one of the most common reasons people visit us at Keshavbaug.

Why does sciatica happen?

The sciatic nerve is formed by nerve roots coming out of the lower spine. When one of these roots is pressed or irritated, pain is felt along the path of the nerve. The most common causes are:

  • A bulging or herniated (slipped) disc in the lower back
  • Age-related narrowing of the spinal canal
  • Lifting heavy weight with a bent back
  • Long hours of sitting or two-wheeler riding
  • Weak core muscles and overweight

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda describes this condition as Gridhrasi, a disorder of Vata dosha. Vata governs movement and the nerves; when it is aggravated by dryness, cold, irregular routine, excessive travel or injury, it causes pain, stiffness and tingling. Treatment therefore aims to calm Vata and nourish the tissues of the spine.

How is it diagnosed?

The doctor examines the back, checks the leg raising test, reflexes and sensation, and reviews an MRI of the lumbar spine if you have one. The MRI shows which disc is involved and how much pressure there is on the nerve.

Treatment without surgery

Most people with sciatica improve with non-surgical care. At Keshavbaug the plan usually includes:

  • Kati Basti: warm medicated oil held over the lower back for focused relief.
  • Patra Pinda Sweda: heated herbal leaf bundles to reduce pain and spasm.
  • Agnikarma: therapeutic heat at specific painful points, which often gives quick relief.
  • Basti: a course of medicated enemas, considered the main treatment for Vata disorders.
  • Internal medicines to support the nerves and reduce inflammation.
  • Exercises taught once the pain settles, to strengthen the core.

A typical course takes 14 to 21 days.

8 everyday habits that protect your back

  1. Break long sitting. Stand and walk for two minutes every 30 to 40 minutes.
  2. Lift with your knees, not your back. Keep the weight close to your body.
  3. Avoid forward bending while the pain is strong.
  4. Sleep on a firm mattress, with a pillow under the knees or between them.
  5. Walk a little every day, increasing slowly.
  6. Limit two-wheeler riding on rough roads during treatment.
  7. Eat warm, fresh food; avoid cold, stale and gas-forming food.
  8. Do your exercises regularly even after the pain goes, to prevent it from returning.

When is surgery needed?

Seek urgent medical help if you notice loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the private parts, or rapidly increasing weakness of the leg. These are signs of severe nerve compression and may need surgery. Our doctors will tell you clearly if your MRI and examination suggest this.
