About acidity, constipation & ibs

Acidity causes burning in the chest or stomach, sour belching and nausea. Constipation means hard stools or not passing stool daily. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes bloating, cramps and a mix of loose motions and constipation, often worse with stress. These problems are very common and respond well to diet correction and treatment.

Common causes

  • Irregular meals and late dinners
  • Spicy, oily and fried food
  • Too much tea or coffee
  • Stress and poor sleep
  • Low water and fibre intake
  • Frequent painkillers

Common symptoms

  • Burning in the chest or stomach
  • Gas and bloating after meals

  • Loose motions alternating with constipation

Reports and tests that help

  • H. pylori test if advised
  • Abdominal ultrasound if needed
  • Endoscopy if there are warning signs
  • Thyroid test for long-standing constipation
