Neck & back pain (spondylosis)

About neck & back pain (spondylosis)

Spondylosis is wear and tear of the discs and joints of the spine. In the neck (cervical spondylosis) it can cause neck pain, stiffness, pain spreading to the shoulders or arms, and sometimes giddiness. In the lower back (lumbar spondylosis) it causes stiffness and pain, especially in the morning or after long sitting.

Common causes

  • Age-related wear of discs
  • Long hours on mobile or laptop with the head bent
  • Long two-wheeler rides
  • Weak neck and back muscles
  • High or hard pillow
  • Old injury

Common symptoms

  • Neck pain spreading to shoulders or arms
  • Giddiness on turning the neck
  • Lower back stiffness, worse in the morning
  • Pain after long hours at a desk or on a two-wheeler

Reports and tests that help

  • X-ray of the neck or lower back
  • MRI if pain spreads to the arms or legs with numbness

Bring any reports you already have. The doctor will advise if anything more is needed.
